The Type IX U-boat was designed by Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine in 1935 and 1936 as a large ocean-going submarine for sustained operations far from the home support facilities. U-505 served the German Kriegsmarine (Navy) during World War 2. She is infamously remembered for one of her captains committing suicide in her control room and famously remembered for her intact capture by the Allies. U-505 was part of the large Type IX class of German boats specifically developed for deep sea service, granted inherently long endurance at the expense of agility and dive times.

It was designed for operations in distant waters and possessed good sea keeping qualities. The first boat, U37, was commissioned in August 1938 only three months after being launched.
